The amazing Laura Martin AKA Flying Laura is our next interview. I have had the pleasure of spending a fair bit of time with Laura and she is not only an amazing pole dancer but a beautiful person. She is so inspiring and after spending over a week with her she reminded me to follow my heart and dreams. She is a great performer and instructor and I personally love her style it’s fast and fun.

How long have you been doing pole dancing?
12 years.
The moment you realised you love pole dancing?
The instant i saw a ballerina invert high up on a pole, i knew i wanted to do it. and to be the best! 🙂
Describe your style.
I have a lot of explosive power, and am very quick. transitions are what i am best at. i would call my style energetic, and heart centered, and daring.
Favorite move?
The flying laura of course ! i really don’t know if my name is more my style, or actual moves i have created… but its also known as leg switches, electric leg switch, body switching, ect. I have perfected this over doing it for most of my time as a pole dancer, nearly 12 years! and invented it with straight legged switching, its so fun to perform!
Tools of the trade, what can’t you live without when pole dancing?
1. fun, can’t live without the fun.
2. a song that i connect with on a deep level, VS. a song that i think others will like. its always has to come from an organic connection, and to trust that connection. it is so liberating this way.
Favorite pole dancing memory?
Man, there are SO many moments with my career that stand out. But the one that has made the biggest impact and momentum in my life is winning the american pole fitness championships. Everything from the training leading up to the competition, to the mental preparation of the performance, and actually living in the performance, and hearing my name called, which I was so wrapped up in being present and letting it all out on stage, that I wasn’t even concerned with the win. I was not expecting it, and quite frankly, it was a huge validating experience for me. I have been pole dancing for so long, and have competed and never won a title, so it was a huge day for me. I worked really hard too, so that day taught me a lot about believing in yourself and your dreams, because if you put in the work, they come true.
Any hobbies or passions outside of pole dancing?
Outside pole dancing, I would say my passions are good conversations with interesting people and great friends, reading, journaling, and letting my imagination run wild. Besides creating and people, and hanging out on the beach in the summer, I love experiencing culture, spirituality, helping others and nature from all over the world. This world is a really beautiful place if one is open to seeing it, and this is something I am grateful for.

Can’t live without?
Spirit…i cant live with out it, because I would be nothing with out it. it is me, it is what drives me, it lives through me. No, I am not a religious person. Religion is different to me… the spirit I am referring to is that thing on the inside that inspires us to believe in more, I just look inside, and that has been my best guide. I would not be where I am now if not for it.

hahaha… well, what I wanted to be was a rockstar, but everyone else told me I couldn’t do that, but it didn’t matter, because I always ended up not listening, and doing what I wanted to anyway… So, now, I get t
o perform, and I am SO grateful for that!
Favourite things of all time:
Movie: from the 80’s…dirty dancing, and don’t mind watching the occasional dry or high brow humor. recently, saw “blueberry” known as “renegade” in the US.. really great cinematography and story.
TV Show: Frankly, I don’t watch TV… its a waste of my emotional and mental energy.
Musician: this is a tough one for me, because i am one of those people that appreciates music for what it is, and appreciate all its qualities… though, I will say one band that sticks out in my head is Tool. Others that stick out in my mind are legends like led zeppelin, and michael jackson. However, I cant go without hip hop or soul, like Jurassic 5, john legend, marvin gaye, stevie wonder. But I love the new movement of more underground electronic genres like Bird of prey, phutureprimitive, bassnectar, to name a few.
song: well, I have one song, that I heard as little girl, it changed my life. its corny and old, but the message is beautiful. its called ” love song” by an 80’s rock band.. testla. I don’t know if I would call it a favorite, as much as a song with an endearing, sweet memory. It warmed my heart with hope at a very young age.. i’ll never forget that.
Book: I love books! I especially seem to love self help books for artists, like “war of art” or “do the work” by steven pressfield, or “the artist way”, I also REALLY love the book ” the alchemist” by paulo coelho.. a book of following your heart and adventure, oooh, and i love reading poetry by the sufi poet rumi… especially ” the book of love”.
Magazine: I prefer online resources,
Food: I LOVE food!! I love green stuff, I love thai cuisine, I love fruits and veggies, and ooh, sweet potatoes !! I am a predominately vegan, clean eater. I am very passionate about this, with the growing external costs of our way of life being so traumatic to our environment, I know food to be a great way to be an active part of eliminating on polluting the world, and our bodies. Please don’t mistake what I am saying as an extremist, I am not saying meat is bad for everyone, however, I do feel as our industries stand now, we have a lot of changing to do to become more in balance with our planet. Clean eating, and organic, is one strong and reachable way to be involved in our day to day lives.
Designer: I love having custom designs made for costumes, ideas, and any creative project i may have. I would love to be more in the fashion loop, guess thats on my to do list 🙂
